God on High

Most of us are familiar with the image of God in the clouds, sending His rays of glory down to the earth. But one could just as easily find the Holy in the steadfast rocks or the green and growing earth.

Where do you see the Divine?

The Daily Compass offers words and images to inspire spiritual reflection and encourage the creation of a more loving, inclusive and just world. Produced by The Church of the Larger Fellowship, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Without Walls.

I live in a cabin by a lake in the woods…in New Jersey! We have deer, bear, eagles, wild turkey and herons. Don’t judge a place until you visit it yourself.

The Divine is everywhere — in, around, and connecting through each and every aspect of Creation. That Source Spark lies deep within every living thing (and every thing is living, not just people, plants, and animals). And when any two of us “connect” it empowers the shared spark, and electrifies the Web of ife – of which, we are all a part.

I believe everything makes up the holy, that reality itself is sacred as well as the imagination. However, I don’t often connected to something spiritual by simply going about my day. Sometimes something beautiful – stars on a clear night, a misty morning, a soaring raptor, a lit chalice, a waterfall, the forest, and so on – breaks through.

Love can also feel sacred. By this I don’t mean simply romantic love, but also that towards my dogs when they cuddle on my lap, play ball with me, work so attentively with me when they want a treat, and so on. I sometimes also get that feeling with other humans, but not as often.

Sometimes I can also consciously connect to the universe. I will sit still in a quiet room, looking at a candle burning on my chalice, trying to think about nothing but instead reach for that feeling deep within me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m not sure exactly why I don’t try this very often. I used to do this every day but had to stop when my hip started to act up. After going to physical therapy and developing a different sitting arrangement, I generally don’t feel that pain anymore. Still, I haven’t gotten back into the habit. Sometimes I’m too anxious, but that isn’t the case every day.

Other mindfulness exercises can also connect me to the divine, though they generally aren’t as effective for me.
